Clark's Reflections / James 3:13-14

James 3:13-14 King James Version (KJV)
13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.
14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.

James 3:13-14 New Life Version (NLV)
Wisdom from Above

13 Who among you is wise and understands? Let that one show from a good life by the things he does that he is wise and gentle. 14 If you have jealousy in your heart and fight to have many things, do not be proud of it. Do not lie against the truth.

13 We shouldn’t feel a need to brag about the wisdom we have but use it instead in our walk with the Lord. True wisdom shouldn’t bring out pride because pride is not wise. We as Christians should consider other more then we do ourselves.

14 Often times people who brag feel this miss something in their life and bragging brings them some joy that they feel they are missing. We often times can be like that but we are to be more like Christ and let the truth be seen in our lives.

Clark's Reflections / Jonah 2:1-3

Jonah 2:1-3 King James Version (KJV)
2 Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish's belly,
2 And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice.
3 For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me.

Jonah 2:1-3 New Life Version (NLV)
Jonah’s Prayer

2 Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God while in the stomach of the fish, 2 saying, “I called out to the Lord because of my trouble, and He answered me. I cried for help from the place of the dead, and You heard my voice. 3 You threw me into the deep waters, to the very bottom of the sea. A flood was all around me and all Your waves passed over me.

1 Jonah finally turns to the Lord, what Jonah thought was going to happen if he died because he would have met with God and would have known that he ran from His plan.

2 Jonah knows that God would hear him, Jonah still had a rebellious heart, God had to use this time to break him, and sometimes God has to break us so we can better be used for Him.

3 Jonah realizes his situation but needs to be willing to do what God wants of him, sometimes we fall because we are unwilling to submit to His will.

Clark's Reflections / James 3:10-12

James 3:10-12 King James Version (KJV)
10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.
11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?
12 Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.

James 3:10-12 New Life Version (NLV)

10 Giving thanks and speaking bad words come from the same mouth. My Christian brothers, this is not right! 11 Does a well of water give good water and bad water from the same place? 12 Can a fig tree give olives or can a grape-vine give figs? A well does not give both good water and bad water.

10 We often double talk; our talk should always be good. We should not bring curses but rather pray for them.

11 We need to be the good water, we need to stop letting the bad flow out of us but let it all honor God.

12 We cant truly be Christian if we are bearing the fruit of this world, thru Jesus we will bear His fruit although sin hinders the produce.

Jonah 1:15-17 King James Version (KJV)
15 So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging.
16 Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice unto the LORD, and made vows.
17 Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

Jonah 1:15-17 New Life Version (NLV)

15 So they picked up Jonah and threw him into the sea, and the storm stopped. 16 Then the men feared the Lord very much. They gave a gift in worship to the Lord and made promises to Him.
17 The Lord sent a big fish to swallow Jonah, and he was in the stomach of the fish for three days and three nights.

15 This was something they didn’t want to do but had to, the storms of life that come running from God will follow us where we go.

16 They did this for repentance, this shows that they were more genuine then Jonah was, they were sorrowful for what they had to do. We should be this same way everytime we sin.

17 So God had Jonah swallowed by a fish, instead of having him die, this was to break him so that he would go to Nineveh as the Lord wanted from Him. Sometimes the Lord has to break us.

Clark's Reflections / James 3:7-9

James 3:7-9 King James Version (KJV)
7 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:
8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
9 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.

James 3:7-9 International Children’s Bible (ICB)

7 People can tame every kind of wild animal, bird, reptile, and fish, and they have tamed them. 8 But no one can tame the tongue. It is wild and evil. It is full of poison that can kill. 9 We use our tongues to praise our Lord and Father, but then we curse people. And God made them like himself.

7 Most animals can be trained by man; God has given man this authority.

8-9 The tongue can be wilder then any animal, it hard to control what we say, it comes thru submission to the Lord. The tongue can harm and destroy others it can spread lies and hate but thru Jesus the tongue can be used for holy reasons.

Jonah 1:12-14 King James Version (KJV)
12 And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you.
13 Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it to the land; but they could not: for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous against them.
14 Wherefore they cried unto the LORD, and said, We beseech thee, O LORD, we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man's life, and lay not upon us innocent blood: for thou, O LORD, hast done as it pleased thee.

Jonah 1:12-14 New Life Version (NLV)

12 Jonah said to them, “Pick me up and throw me into the sea. Then the sea will quiet down for you. For I know that this bad storm has come upon you because of me.” 13 The men rowed hard to return to land, but they could not, for the wind was blowing even worse against them. 14 Then they called on the Lord and said, “We beg You, O Lord, do not let us die for what this man has done. And do not let us become guilty for killing someone who is not to blame. For You, O Lord, have done as You have pleased.”

12 Jonah didn’t want them to suffer because of them, he also didn’t want to have them turn around the boast, them sailing back to where Jonah was meant to go would have stopped the storm as well most likely but he still didn’t want to go.

13 They tried to do what they could because throwing a man overboard was crazy, that is because if Jonah told them to make a uturn and take him to Ninevah, then God’s wrath on him would pass. We can bring others down when we rebel against the Lord.

14 They didn’t want God to be angry with them, this should have been something Jonah was concerned with. They submit to God because of the influence of the storm but they should have been influenced by Jonah but because he was running from God they couldn’t.

Clark's Reflections / James 3:5-6

James 3:5-6 King James Version (KJV)
5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

James 3:5-6 New Life Version (NLV)

5 The tongue is also a small part of the body, but it can speak big things. See how a very small fire can set many trees on fire. 6 The tongue is a fire. It is full of wrong. It poisons the whole body. The tongue sets our whole lives on fire with a fire that comes from hell.

5-6 The tongue is small but can such trouble but also give blessing. The tongue can boast but should give praise to the Lord. We can use the tongue to encourage or tear down. The tongue an start problems that just move beyond our control and sometimes it don’t take long.

Jonah 1:10-11 King James Version (KJV)
10 Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him. Why hast thou done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.
11 Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous.

Jonah 1:10-11 New Life Version (NLV)

10 Then the men were filled with fear and said to him, “How could you do this?” For the men knew that he was running away from the Lord, because he had told them. 11 So they said to him, “What should we do to you to make the sea quiet down for us?” For the storm was getting worse.

10 Fear was because they were all going to die if nothing was done because of Jonah. They were also upset with Jonah. The testimony Jonah had on this boat was that he was running from God rather then serving Him, we should never let our testimony be this because it keeps from coming to the faith.

11 They knew they needed to do something otherwise they would die, they look to Jonah because its his fault and he was the one to go before God because they served other gods.

Clark's Reflections / Jonah 1:7-9

Jonah 1:7-9 King James Version (KJV)
7 And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.
8 Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; What is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?
9 And he said unto them, I am an Hebrew; and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, which hath made the sea and the dry land.

Jonah 1:7-9 New Life Version (NLV)

7 Then the sailors said to each other, “Come, let us draw names so we can find out who is to blame for this trouble.” So they drew names, and Jonah’s name was drawn. 8 Then they said to him, “Now tell us! Who is to blame for this? What is your work? Where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you?” 9 Jonah said to them, “I am a Hebrew, and I worship the Lord God of heaven Who made the sea and the dry land.”

7 It was Jonah’s fault, the drew names because they knew based off this storm that God had to be against someone.

8 They wanted to know why they were going thru all this because of him. Often times our actions will drag other people down.

9 Jonah was indeed a Hebrew but right now rather then worshiping God, he was running from His plan, we should never run from God’s plan.

Clark's Reflections / Jonah 1:4-6

Jonah 1:4-6 King James Version (KJV)
4 But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.
5 Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.
6 So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not.

Jonah 1:4-6 New Life Version (NLV)

4 Then the Lord sent a powerful wind upon the sea, and there was such a big storm that the ship was about to break up. 5 The sailors became afraid, and every man cried to his god. They threw the things that were in the ship into the sea so that it would not be so heavy. But Jonah had gone below in the ship and had lain down and fallen asleep. 6 So the captain went to him and said, “How can you sleep? Get up and call on your god. It may be that your god will care about us, and we will not die.”

4 This storm was sent because of Jonah running from the Lord it could be that this storm only hit this boat, it may have been like the cartoons where the storm cloud follows them. Sinful behavior follows us and we can’t hide from it and God will either see the blood of Christ over our sins or judge our sins.

5 Jonah was sleeping during this storm, he was perfectly alright with running from the Lord, and we can get a hard heart from being alright with not following the Lord. The people most likely were used to storms and new what to do but this storm was different then any other.

6 The captain went to get Jonah, first off Jonah was not in good standing with God to cry out to Him for safety even though God who Jonah called Lord could stop this storm because He sent it. Jonah was currently making himself Lord, we as Christians have to die to self daily so that we don’t make ourselves Lord.
