Clark's Reflections / James 2:24-26

James 2:24-26 King James Version (KJV)
24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.
25 Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?
26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

James 2:24-26 New Life Version (NLV)

24 A man becomes right with God by what he does and not by faith only. 25 The same was true with Rahab, the woman who sold the use of her body. She became right with God by what she did in helping the men who had been sent to look through the country and sent them away by another road. 26 The body is dead when there is no spirit in it. It is the same with faith. Faith is dead when nothing is done.

24 We are friends with Jesus by keeping His commands this is act of working thru faith. Righteousness is based of what we are doing, works, in our right living, grace.

25 Rahab protected the Israelite spies as they went into Jericho, they needed her aid and they made sure she was saved from the destruction of the city because of the work she did out of faith. She had faith that God would allow them to take the city otherwise she would not have acted because then there would be no concern about her safety. She also had faith they would come back to help her.

26 James compares faith to a corpse. Just as a body is a body but without life it is dead, James is saying the life to our faith is works and without these works our faith is dead and without life.

Clark's Reflections / Ruth 4:3-4

Ruth 4:3-4 King James Version (KJV)
3 And he said unto the kinsman, Naomi, that is come again out of the country of Moab, selleth a parcel of land, which was our brother Elimelech's:
4 And I thought to advertise thee, saying, Buy it before the inhabitants, and before the elders of my people. If thou wilt redeem it, redeem it: but if thou wilt not redeem it, then tell me, that I may know: for there is none to redeem it beside thee; and I am after thee. And he said, I will redeem it.

Ruth 4:3-4 New Life Version (NLV)

3 Then Boaz said to the close in-law, “Naomi has returned from the land of Moab. She is selling the piece of land which belonged to our brother Elimelech. 4 I thought I should let you know about it. Buy it in front of those who are sitting here, and in front of the leaders of my people. If you will buy it, then buy it. But if not, tell me you do not want to buy it, so I may know. For you have the right to be the first one to buy it. And I am after you.” The man said, “I will buy it.”

3 So he is speaking to the next of kin, being next kin duty often was based on the property gained rather then the marriage although the purpose of it was for them to gain land to take care of the widow.  Legally because he had not yet did his duty as next of kin she was selling the land because she had to for survival.

4 So the property is being sold he has first rights to it as next of kin Boaz is taking care of everything that is the next of kin duty he is giving up the land that went along with marrying Ruth to take away that being the reason he marries her, the only now he would have to marry her would be he wanted Ruth as a wife which this would allow her to be loved.

Clark's Reflections / Ruth 4:1-2

Ruth 4:1-2 King James Version (KJV)
4 Then went Boaz up to the gate, and sat him down there: and, behold, the kinsman of whom Boaz spake came by; unto whom he said, Ho, such a one! turn aside, sit down here. And he turned aside, and sat down.
2 And he took ten men of the elders of the city, and said, Sit ye down here. And they sat down.

Ruth 4:1-2 New Life Version (NLV)
Boaz Marries Ruth

4 Boaz went up to the gate and sat down there. He saw the in-law of the family that he had spoken about pass by. So Boaz said, “Come here, friend, and sit down.” So the man came and sat down. 2 And Boaz took ten of the leaders of the city and said, “Sit down here.” So they sat down.

1 Boaz went to the gate because at this time it was where the men commonly met, he went to find Ruth’s next of kin to talk to him as he told her he would. Boaz finds him and talks to him, we should not put off what we tell others we will do.

2 The leaders are there both to make sure they keep the law and that they could be witnesses to what happened. Boaz had a right to marry Ruth if this man didn’t according to the law but if this man claimed that he would marry her and Boaz already did it was seen as adultery.

Ruth 3:17-18King James Version (KJV)
17 And she said, These six measures of barley gave he me; for he said to me, Go not empty unto thy mother in law.
18 Then said she, Sit still, my daughter, until thou know how the matter will fall: for the man will not be in rest, until he have finished the thing this day.

Ruth 3:17-18New Life Version (NLV)

17 She said, “He gave me these six jars full of grain. For he said, ‘Do not go to your mother-in-law with empty hands.’” 18 Naomi said, “Wait until you know what is going to happen, my daughter. For the man will not rest until the thing is decided upon today.”

17 Ruth and Naomi both knew this was generous. Boaz showed he could provide which is very important for her because both were widows that needed to be cared for. How generous do we live?

18 Boaz was going to try to get permission to marry her and Naomi knew that, sometimes we just have to wait.

Clark's Reflections / James 2:20-23

James 2:20-23 King James Version (KJV)
20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?
21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?
22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?
23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.

James 2:20-23 New Life Version (NLV)

20 You foolish man! Do I have to prove to you that faith without doing things is of no use? 21 Was not our early father Abraham right with God by what he did? He obeyed God and put his son Isaac on the altar to die. 22 You see his faith working by what he did and his faith was made perfect by what he did. 23 It happened as the Holy Writings said it would happen. They say, “Abraham put his trust in God and he became right with God.” He was called the friend of God.

20 If our faith does nothing then it isn’t good God might as well taken us straight to heaven if we don’t do nothing good by Him because we are going to sin by the flesh and without serving God and striving to be like Christ then we would just be a hindrance to people coming to faith, we will sin but letting Jesus carry us to do good and seeking God and growing in Him shows the world that they mess up but thru Jesus they have something better even though they cant be perfect.

21 Abraham was a man of faith but his faith moved by works. Abraham gave up Isaac on an altar God didn’t say to him I see your faith you don’t have to do anything but He asked him to test his faith and our works show our faith and God will allow us to be tested so that our faith can grow.

22 Abraham was not perfect but made perfect his faith in the Word and we are made perfect by the Word because He died on a cross for us. We are made perfect by Christ for us to do good works our good works are His light shown thru us.

23 Abraham’s faith was shown thru his actions; it showed his love for Him and drew him closer to God. We are drawn closer to God by Him working thru us by our faith.

James 2:18-19 King James Version (KJV)
18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.
19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.

James 2:18-19 New Life Version (NLV)

18 Someone may say, “You have faith, and I do things. Prove to me you have faith when you are doing nothing. I will prove to you I have faith by doing things.” 19 You believe there is one God. That is good! But even the demons believe that, and because they do, they shake.

18 If we have faith that does not work then we need to question whether we truly have faith to begin with, our faith should be used by the Spirit to work thru it should just happen to have the Spirit means the Spirit works in us and thru us. Faith should be moving us closer to God.

19 Many people hold there faith to them believing Jesus died on the cross for the sins but Satan knows this to but we have to accept Him as Lord Satan will not do this but this is the requirement for salvation. Jesus should run our life by the Spirit thru our faith.

Ruth 3:15-16 King James Version (KJV)
15 Also he said, Bring the vail that thou hast upon thee, and hold it. And when she held it, he measured six measures of barley, and laid it on her: and she went into the city.
16 And when she came to her mother in law, she said, Who art thou, my daughter? And she told her all that the man had done to her.

Ruth 3:15-16 New Life Version (NLV)

15 And he said, “Bring the coat you are wearing and hold it out.” So she held it, and he loaded her with six jars full of grain. Then she went into the city. 16 When she came to her mother-in-law, Naomi said, “How did it go, my daughter?” And Ruth told her all that the man had done for her.

15 So Boaz gives her plenty of grain, as much as she probably could carry, this shows his love for her and why she wanted him as her husband.

16 So Naomi asks how it went because she cared not because she was a gossip, sometimes we just need to ask friends and family and even others how they are and be willing to listen.

Ruth 3:13-14 King James Version (KJV)
13 Tarry this night, and it shall be in the morning, that if he will perform unto thee the part of a kinsman, well; let him do the kinsman's part: but if he will not do the part of a kinsman to thee, then will I do the part of a kinsman to thee, as the LORD liveth: lie down until the morning.
14 And she lay at his feet until the morning: and she rose up before one could know another. And he said, Let it not be known that a woman came into the floor.

Ruth 3:13-14 New Life Version (NLV)

13 Stay this night. In the morning, if he will have you for his own, let him take you. But if he does not want to have you, then I will take you, as the Lord lives. Lie down until morning.”
14 So Ruth lay at his feet until morning. She got up before the people could see each other. For Boaz said, “Do not let it be known that the woman came to the grain-floor.”

13 For her to trust that God would take care of this was big and is hard she had to follow the law which meant while she wanted to marry Boaz she may have to marry this other guy who was being neglectful towards her otherwise he would have already married her. We have to trust God to work things out like this the same way. Boaz was not going to take as his before she became his but he lets her sleep there, this shows a loving heart on his part. Often times we want to take them as ours before we make that commitment which is sin.

14 This would hurt both how they saw them, this would also cause the kinsmen redeemer to have an issue with Boaz, he could have claimed Boaz took what was his in Ruth. Sometimes our testimony could be hurt simply because of what others think could have happened.

Ruth 3:11-12 King James Version (KJV)
11 And now, my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that thou requirest: for all the city of my people doth know that thou art a virtuous woman.
12 And now it is true that I am thy near kinsman: howbeit there is a kinsman nearer than I.

Ruth 3:11-12 New Life Version (NLV)

11 Now my daughter, do not be afraid. I will do for you whatever you ask. For all my people in the city know that you are a good woman. 12 It is true that I am of your family. But there is one closer than I.

11 Boaz as willing to help her but as a righteous man he has to do things the righteous way. Ruth had gained a good reputation and Boaz knew that God would favor their marriage when we guys look for a wife that is something we should consider deeply.

12 Boaz was not the next of kin so it was not for him to marry her without asking the next of kin wasn’t willing to marry her otherwise they would have already but Boaz still has to ask permission.

Clark's Reflections / Ruth 3:8-10

Ruth 3:8-10 King James Version (KJV)
8 And it came to pass at midnight, that the man was afraid, and turned himself: and, behold, a woman lay at his feet.
9 And he said, Who art thou? And she answered, I am Ruth thine handmaid: spread therefore thy skirt over thine handmaid; for thou art a near kinsman.
10 And he said, Blessed be thou of the LORD, my daughter: for thou hast shewed more kindness in the latter end than at the beginning, inasmuch as thou followedst not young men, whether poor or rich.

Ruth 3:8-10 New Life Version (NLV)

8 The man was surprised late in the night. He turned and saw that a woman was lying at his feet. 9 He said, “Who are you?” She answered, “I am Ruth, your woman servant. Spread your covering over me. For you are of our family.” 10 And Boaz said, “May the Lord bring good to you, my daughter. You have shown your last kindness to be better than your first by not going after young men, with or without riches.

8 Boaz notices Ruth but does not yet know its her.

9 Ruth by doing this made it clear that she wanted to marry him.

10 She wanted to be married to Boaz because of his heart and Boaz knew this about her.
